looming fiscal cliff of spending cuts and tax increases that could push the u.s. into another recession. maria bartiromo is the host of cnbc's "closing bell." >> well, people are putting two and two together, saying wall street dropped the day after the election. simple question, why? >> you're absolutely right. well, first off, people are worried about higher taxes, higher regulation under it had obama presidency. but also, it is this near-term worry about the fiscal cliff. at the end of this year, we will see $600 billion of spending go away. there are spending cuts coming, that means, defense companies, transportation, construction, they may very well have to lay off workers. in addition to that, we've got the highest tax increase coming on virtually all income levels. these two things will coincide, and that is the fiscal cliff to basically possibly push the u.s. economy into recession unless congress does something about it. >> is wall street basically registering its doubt and skepticism that either party can come together and resolve this? >> that's right. i think we will see com

the u.s. designated exclusively for high school mothers. with 220 students, the academy, which caters to pregnant teens and teen moms wasn't always like this. 26 years ago, principal andrews housed babies in a crib in her office. >> it was a little program that was hidden, nobody knew about it. >> reporter: as the demand increased, andrews saw the importance of creating an environment supportive of teen moms, but also gave their babies a head start. >> what do the moms get coming to this school they wouldn't get in another school? >> they get a staff that is focused on them. that is not mad about them being pregnant or parenting, who celebrate the fact that even though they're pregnant and parenting, they're still in school and they're participating in making a life for themselves, giving themselves some choices. >> reporter: choices that can transform these students' lives. >> part of what happens, and it is kind of a bizarre thing to say. for many girls, getting pregnant in high school changes their lives in ways that i don't know what else would've. it's a lifesaver really.

very well. i've met him on several occasions. he's a 1976 honors graduate of the u.s. naval academy. he's got a -- a masters degree from georgetown, from the national war college. he's quite an intellectual actually. a great infantry marine and has had an absolutely stellar career. all this personal stuff coming out at a very, very difficult time complicates matters, both for our effort in southwest asia and for the upcoming budget battle. >> further complicating it is that he's about to leave as the head of the allied forces in afghanistan and had been due for a new post-as head of the military's efforts in europe. do you think that is likely on hold at this point? >> well, it's on hold now. it has not -- his nomination as the supreme court allied commander europe has not yet been withdrawn, but i wouldn't be surprised if it is withdrawn. i think they want to get through this as quickly as possible. they are likely to shouldn't him off to some other place. let him carry on in afghanistan until they can -- until general dunford takes over, withdraw his nomination to be supreme allie
